She wore tiny dresses with delicate lace,

pink ribbons tied in her hair,

she played with cut-out paper dolls,

behind the back porch stairs.

She experienced life in her books,

read fairy tales with happy endings;

imagined great castles high in the air,

where a handsome prince on a white horse,

would rescue his princess trapped in a lair.

She believed with her heart,

that every frog was a  prince,

that a wish on a star would come true,

a kiss could wake a princess,

 and each tomorrow

was a promise in the morning dew.

She dreamed of a grand ballroom,

dressed in a gown of pink and sparkling gold,

where she would dance with a prince

until the first light of dawn.

She wished for the storybook ending.

Life has it's way of changing,

and the child,

she grew.

She left her childhood dreams behind,

locked them somewhere deep inside her heart,

cherishing the fantasy,

of once upon a time,

and  storybook endings
