I
ask you how you're doing,
you smile and say, "ok"
Things are fine,
and yes,
the weather's nice today.
I notice that your smile,
seems a little out of place,
and the quiet words
I hear you saying,
hold a melancholy trace.
I say it's so nice to see you;
it been such a long while.
There so much more
I'd like to say,
but I just stand there
not sure what to say.
Your eyes seem sad today,
There seems so much
you aren't saying;
I'd like to tell you more,
but we're both just too busy,
and half-way out the door.
We wear our masquerade,
don't speak of our feelings,
of the loneliness sometimes,
of all the things we wish for,
all the things we never share.
We stand close for a moment,
not knowing what else to say,
it's the mask we show
to make it though each day.
The flippant words make it easier to get thru the day;
So, I'll give you my smile,
try to
leave you with
special thoughts,
and make you laugh today.
We'll really much the same,
you and I,
we laugh, we love,
we cry.
And when we meet,
to exchange our pleasant words,
to
smile sweetly,
and leave the rest unheard;
I would like it very much
if along with your pleasant words,
you gave me a hug,
for just that moment,
you'll see behind the mask,
and I'll be there.
